LethaldiranMX Insight
Inlarge offers a refreshing, UX-focused alternative to traditional lightbox overlays by implementing inline image expansion directly within the content flow. By leveraging the abc-enlarge jQuery library, it preserves the reader’s spatial context, making it an exceptional tool for editorial sites, long-form journalism, and digital magazines where maintaining reading flow is critical. The plugin intelligently swaps lower-resolution thumbnails for high-resolution sources only upon user interaction, optimizing initial page load while still delivering crisp details when requested. This elegant execution respects modern web design principles by avoiding disruptive modal backdrops that isolate the user from the surrounding text.
Best Fit & Operational Role: This plugin is best suited for content-heavy WordPress sites, such as online publications, technical blogs, and portfolio sites, that require detailed image inspection without interrupting the narrative flow. Operationally, it replaces heavy, resource-intensive lightbox scripts with a lightweight jQuery-based inline zoom mechanism. It solves the common UX friction point where users lose their place in an article after opening an image modal, keeping engagement high by allowing text to flow naturally around expanded media. It integrates seamlessly into both the Classic and Block editors, offering granular, post-level control to toggle the behavior on standard images and native galleries.
Potential Limitations & Pitfalls: Because the plugin relies on the jQuery-based abc-enlarge library, sites aiming for a completely jQuery-free front-end will experience a minor performance trade-off due to this dependency. Additionally, the automatic zoom functionality requires images to be wrapped in links to their media files, which demands consistent content entry practices from editors. Beyond these standard architectural dependencies, no significant performance overhead or security risks are identified based on available information.
Inline image zoom for WordPress. Enlarges images in place without covering the page, so the surrounding text stays readable.
Inlarge brings the abc-enlarge jQuery library to WordPress. Unlike typical lightbox plugins that dim the whole screen, it enlarges the clicked image in place — the article text around it stays readable. Ideal for web magazines and long-form articles.
👉 Try the live demo — click an image and watch the text keep flowing around it. A before/after comparison is in the screenshots below.
What it does
- Automatically adds the
abc-enlargeclass to linked images in your post content (only images wrapped in a link to an image file, so nothing breaks). - Swaps in the high-resolution image from the link’s
hrefon click, and restores the small one on collapse. - On portrait phones, expands the image into a horizontally scrollable, auto-centered view.
- Can also apply to WordPress galleries (classic and block), making those images enlargeable regardless of their link setting. Off by default — tick it per post.
- Lets you disable enlargement per post — enabled by default.
Usage
Under Settings Inlarge, tick which post types (post, page, custom post types) enlargement runs on. Only checked post types are enabled; all eligible types are checked by default.
Within an enabled post type, each post also has controls in the Inlarge box:
- Block editor: the box appears at the bottom of the editor.
- Classic editor: the box appears in the right-hand sidebar.
The “Enable image enlargement for this post” checkbox is checked by default; uncheck it to opt that post out. The Apply to WordPress galleries checkbox is off by default — tick it when you also want images inside classic and block galleries to be enlargeable.
